the Layer Project:

To clarify the layer metaphore to myself, I try imagining what a layer stack would be to a creature who doesn´t speculate. Ever. Also, this creature doesn´t understand some of the basics that really feels like a cornerstone of existence.

For instance, I spent hours of my precious life trying to get the concept of rhythm through to my thick little canine friend Harry, may his possibly existing soul rest in peace. Don´t get me wrong, the darling creature possessed tons of rhythmic abilities; you can´t very well travel on those short legs (Harry was a dachshund) without superb rhythmic proficiency, especially in combination with the syncopated movements of the ever present wagging tail. But from exercising rhythm to assessing it intellectually and aesthetically is a giant leap and for mankind only. No dogs allowed.

Yet the dachshund, like most animate beings, is supported by a steadily beating heart and a gazillion bodily fluids and signal substances that are regulated by less obvious but most intricate rhythms. In a sense, the world is built on rhythm, but the very concept is unavailable to our best friends.

I don´t know whether God exists or not, but I believe She might be an ever present roaring resonant rhythm that builds us all, but is completely incomprehensible to our feeble minds.

Maybe easily understood and appreciated by Harry the Dachshund, though.
